What temperament are you?

Do you know you are unique? Everyone is unique in their own way, but have you ever tried knowing who you are? Have you ever tried knowing what makes you different from everyone, what makes you stand out? What temperament are you?

First of all, temperament is defined as the mental, physical and emotional trait of a person. Your personal attitude or nature towards things, how you reason and handle situations. It is assumed to be an early indication of personality but personality and temperament are two different things though they are related.
Personality is your attitude, perception, behaviour towards things based on what you have experienced, it is an acquired trait but temperament is basic, it is an inborn character. It is who you are and it's not based on experiences.

Why is this important?
It helps in making better decisions. You know your strengths and weaknesses so you don't make drastic decisions.
You will know the type of career/job to embark on and will know what suits you.
Your interactions with people gets better.
You are able to handle your emotions well and other things.

There are four generally accepted temperament types. They are the
  • Sanguine
  • Choleric
  • Melancholy
  • Phlegmatic
Some people have combinations of these temperaments. For instance, a person can have both sanguine and phlegmatic attributes. Let's go into the major personality types.

Sanguine
They are lively, optimistic, buoyant and carefree people. They love to experience new things, go on adventures. They love taking risks. They are attention seekers, they love the spotlight.

They can't tolerate boredom, a repetitive routine or job annoys them, so they avoid monotony at all costs.

They are very bold; not afraid to communicate with others; love new friendships and have so many friends.

They have a very unstable mood ,they have mood swings alot. They are unstable and unreliable. Today, they want to do something, the next day you won't see them. They make drastic decisions.

They will do well in the fashion, cooking, sports, travel e.t.c.

Choleric
They are goal oriented people; if they make up their mind to do something they will do it no matter how much you try to change their mind. They are logical and analytical.

They are straightforward people, they don't beat around the bush. They will tell you what is on their mind; whether it hurts you or not is none of their business. They are capable of making sensible decisions. They are usually good leaders, open, confident, optimistic and task oriented.

The bad side is that they are hot-tempered, cruel and abusive. Nothing you do pleases them. They think highly of themselves so they hardly listen to people's opinions.

Melancholy
They are great thinkers, calm, creative, artistic, perfectionists. They love to organize, they don't get bored easily and they excel at tasks that require attention and repetition.

They pay attention to detail; they remember special events, dates, also details about their neighbors and colleagues. They stick to the rules and are very reliable.

But on the negative side, they are rigid; they don't like experiencing new things. They are stubborn. They are very pessimistic, they believe nothing good can ever happen. They love to criticize and are very judgemental. They can become fixated on the past, how they could have done something else in the past; instead of moving on they still think about their regrets.

Phlegmatic
These people are imaginative. They will try to read your body language and tell you what you were thinking from your half smile. They are very calm, peacemakers. They don't like trouble and try to amend relationships. They are very compassionate, they want to understand what the other person is feeling or thinking. They are co-operative and trusting. They love to help the society and the world at large by donating to orphanages, helping the less privileged. If they could make the world a better place, they would.

But their problem is that they are very indecisive. They are easily swayed by people's opinions. They focus on unrealistic things instead of the important things. They talk alot and this can be annoying. They always assume that you see and feel the world the same way they do. They can't handle insults or criticisms so are very prone to depression.
